Mel Schilling, relationship expert and a familiar face on the Married at First Sight franchise, has died aged 54. Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed the news on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, saying she died peacefully surrounded by family. Schilling had spoken publicly about living with terminal bowel cancer, using her platform to raise awareness of the disease.
Her death follows a deterioration in her health after she said earlier this month that treatment options had been exhausted. Schilling became well known in the UK and Australia for her direct on-screen assessments of relationship dynamics, and her role in the expansion of the Married at First Sight brand.
She moved into television in her 40s after working in corporate psychology. She is survived by her husband and their daughter, Maddie.
Illness and final weeks
Schilling’s health problems began in late 2023. In December, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer after suffering severe stomach cramps while filming in the UK. Doctors found a tumour in her colon and she underwent surgery, after which she said she had initially been given the all-clear.
In February 2024, follow-up scans found the cancer had returned and spread to her lungs. She continued working while receiving chemotherapy, often scheduled around Married at First Sight UK filming.
On 12 March 2026, Schilling posted an update on social media saying her condition had worsened and her care was moving towards palliation. She continued to stress the importance of recognising symptoms and seeking medical advice, noting that early signs can be mistaken for common digestive problems.
Bowel cancer is often diagnosed at a later stage because early symptoms can be subtle. Health experts consistently emphasise the value of screening and checks for persistent changes.
Television career and public profile
Schilling’s television career was closely tied to the Married at First Sight franchise. She joined the Australian series and appeared in about 190 episodes through to 2025, bringing a background in human behaviour and performance to the format.
In 2021, she joined Married at First Sight UK and appeared across four series. She became known for challenging behaviour she saw as harmful, while pushing contestants towards clearer communication and boundaries.
Outside television, she worked as an author and speaker, focusing on confidence and workplace and relationship dynamics. She also maintained a large online following, where she discussed dating trends and relationship psychology.
Tributes from colleagues and fans
Tributes have been paid by figures from across the entertainment industry and the show’s international audience. Brisbane wrote on Instagram that Schilling had shown “courage” and “compassion”, and asked for privacy for the family.
UK colleagues Paul C Brunson and Charlene Douglas described her as a close friend and a powerful presence on set. Production teams behind the programme also issued statements crediting her with shaping the franchise’s global reach.
Fans have shared clips and messages online, with #MelSchilling trending as viewers recalled her best-known moments and the impact of her advice. Episodes filmed before her death are expected to air later this year.
